EMERGING INNOVATIONS EPISODE 3 – CACAO

Who would not love chocolates? With their delectable taste, chocolates have been everybody’s favorite for thousands of years now. Chocolate is a favorite food to millions of people on earth. However, have you asked yourself where chocolates come from? Or how chocolate is produced? Raw chocolate actually grows on a tree known as the cacao tree. Cacao is scientifically known as Theobroma cacao. Did you know that last September 7, 2020, the Department of Agriculture declared Davao City as the Cacao Capital of the Philippines? Yes! You heard that right! Cacao is considered an equatorial crop- which means it thrives well in regions occupying the equator, that’s why the Philippines has a great potential in growing cacao considering our climatic conditions and soil characteristics here. That is our topic for this episode. We will be highlighting a study from the University of Southeastern Philippines, a state university located at the heart of Davao City, Philippines. The study is “Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Soils under Cacao Production System in Davao de Oro, Philippines”. We will learn directly from one of the proponents of this research, Mr. Nelvin A. Villason, a faculty of the University of Southeastern Philippines – Tagum Mabini Campus. If you want to read more about this innovation, you may go to journal.usep.edu.ph and look for the paper titled “Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Soils under Cacao Production System in Davao de Oro, Philippines”.
